Joshua Mitchell, professor at Georgetown University, explains that America has always been committed to the idea that citizens can work together to build a common world. Today, three afflictions keep us from pursuing that noble ideal: 1) identity politics, 2) peoples’ oscillation between feeling invincible and feeling impotent, and 3) an addiction to finding shortcuts in life.
