Charles de Foucauld was a former French playboy who had a radical conversion to Christ that compelled him to live a deeply ascetical religious life. Largely unknown during his lifetime as a solitary monk in the Sahara Desert, he was assassinated by bandits in 1916 and canonized a saint on May 15, 2022.
